Cordless Lawn Mowers Increase in Popularity With Continued Advancement

Over the years there has been big changes in lawn mowers evolution, especially the electric type. An electric mower comes in two basic types - those with cords and those with none. The least expensive type of electric mower is the corded variety, and while suitable for small lawns, you are limited to the reach of the cord or extension cord. If you want an earth-friendly mower, but have a large property or don't want to have to work with the limitations of a power cord, a cordless model is a better choice.

Cordless mowers offer a mowing experience similar to a traditional gas mower, with the bonus of quieter operation, less exhaust and lower operating costs. While they used to be regarded as poor substitutes for a gas mower, electric lawn mowers have improved in quality. There is a vast array of cordless lawn mowers aside from what was the traditionally know as the cordless mower. Advancements in technology are expanding this class of lawn mowers rapidly, and giving consumers new choices.

One such choice is the solar mower. While you can generally expect electric lawn mowers to operate for 45 minutes on a charge, a solar-charged mower adds about 15 to 20 minutes of run time. These mowers come with photovoltaic panels, and buyers have the option of mower-mounted panels, or panels that can be mounted on a garage roof. The roof-mounted system makes it possible to recharge the mower when it's put away, an important consideration for users in urban communities. If you already own a battery-powered lawn mower, it can be converted with specific kits that are available online.

Another innovation in the cordless mowers market is the introduction of robotic technology. These mowers are programmed to mow the grass automatically. Opening up new and exciting possibilities. They can work around objects and uneven borders, and will return to their charging station to power up as needed. Some models even have sensors that will detect rain and keep the mower inside until it's dry.

Despite their obvious appeal, robotic mowers are not yet commonly found in households. Starting around $1000, the entry-level models are still expensive and have some performance limitations. They don't work well on a slope, and sometimes end up mowing in circles. These robotic systems take considerable time to set up and require continual tinkering to operate effectively, but with time and continued improvement, these cordless lawn mowers will likely become more popular in the future.
